Pune, 15th June 2023: The Higher and Technical Education Department in the Maharashtra state has taken a significant step towards enhancing the quality of higher education by establishing a state-level internal quality assurance cell. This cell will be responsible for conducting educational audits of colleges, reviewing the functioning of internal quality assurance cells in colleges, and suggesting measures to improve educational quality, with the aim of increasing the NACC assessment.

The government’s decision to establish the state-level internal quality assurance cell was announced by the Higher and Technical Education Department. In 2016, a State Level Internal Quality Assurance Cell was set up under the National Higher Education Mission of the Central Government to ensure quality in education through an effective monitoring system. However, with the National Education Policy of 2020 giving greater emphasis to education quality, it was decided to establish a new state-level internal quality assurance chamber to align with the updated policy.

The newly established state-level internal quality assurance chamber comprises nine members, including the Rusa Project Director, Director of Higher Education, Director of Technical Education, and former Chancellor of Mumbai University, Dr. Vijay Joshi. This unit will be responsible for conducting educational audits at the university and college levels, providing guidance for improving capacity development processes, expediting the assessment process, and offering assistance for NACC assessments.
