Maharashtra Witnesses First Community Wedding for Transgender Couples in Pune

Pimpri Chinchwad, 28th January 2025: In a groundbreaking event, Pune hosted Maharashtra’s first community wedding ceremony for transgender couples today. The ceremony, organised by the social organisation “Nari The Women,” saw five transgender couples tie the knot in a joyous and celebratory atmosphere. This historic wedding took place at Balaji Lawn, a marriage hall in the Pimpri-Chinchwad area near Pune, following traditional Hindu customs, with engagement rituals performed earlier in the day.

The event was graced by several prominent figures, including Maval MP Shrirang Barne, Chinchwad MLA Shankar Jagtap, Pune District Collector Jitendra Dudi, Additional Director General of Maharashtra Police Krishna Prakash, and Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Commissioner Shekhar Singh. Their presence underscored the significance of this occasion and the support for the transgender community.

This community wedding marks a significant milestone for the transgender community in Maharashtra and has become a topic of widespread discussion in the city, highlighting its importance in promoting inclusivity and acceptance. The ceremony was notable for the strong family support displayed, as relatives of all five couples attended the wedding without hesitation, participating fully in the celebrations. The newlyweds’ families honoured the dignitaries present with shawls, coconuts, and flowers, following traditional customs.
