Mahayuti Sweeps Maharashtra Council Polls, Wins 16 of 17 Seats; BJP Rebel Wins in Nashik
Mumbai, 22nd June 2026: The ruling Mahayuti alliance registered a dominant performance in the Maharashtra Legislative Council elections from local authorities’ constituencies, winning 16 of the 17 seats for which results were declared on Monday. The lone exception was Nashik, where independent candidate and BJP rebel Gokul Gite defeated the official Mahayuti-backed Shiv Sena candidate Narendra Darade.
Polling for the 17 Legislative Council seats was held on June 18. However, six Mahayuti candidates had already been elected unopposed before voting, leaving 11 seats to be decided through the electoral process.
The results underscored Mahayuti’s continued strength across local self-government bodies, while the opposition Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) failed to make a mark in the contest. Of the 17 seats, the BJP secured 11, Shiv Sena won three, the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) bagged two, and one seat went to an Independent candidate.
Among the six candidates elected unopposed were Ravindra Phatak of Shiv Sena from Thane, Dushyant Chaturvedi of Shiv Sena from Yavatmal, Aniket Tatkare of the NCP from the Raigad-Ratnagiri-Sindhudurg constituency, Vikram Kakade of the NCP from Pune, Arun Lakhani of the BJP from the Wardha-Gadchiroli-Chandrapur constituency, and Prajakt Tanpure of the BJP from Ahilyanagar.
Among the constituencies where polling was held, BJP candidates emerged victorious in several key regions. Suhas Shirshat won from Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar-Jalna, Avinash Brahmankar from Bhandara-Gondia, Dhairyashil Kadam from Sangli-Satara, Rajendra Raut from Solapur, Basavaraj Patil from Dharashiv-Latur-Beed, Rajiv Potdar from Nagpur, Nandkishor Mahajan from Jalgaon, Pravin Pote from Amravati and Amar Rajurkar from Nanded. Shiv Sena’s Saeed Khan won from the Parbhani-Hingoli constituency.
The most closely watched contest was in Nashik, where Gokul Gite, contesting as an Independent after rebelling against the BJP, defeated Shiv Sena’s Narendra Darade, dealing an unexpected setback to the Mahayuti alliance in a seat it was expected to retain.
