Pune, 23rd June 2023: The education department of Maharashtra has made a significant decision regarding school education in the state. The School Education Department has amended the Right to Education Act of 2011, bringing forth the implementation of annual examinations for students in the fifth and eighth grades.

Additionally, if a student fails in either the fifth or eighth class, even after being given another chance, they will be retained in the same class.

Ranjitsinh Deol, Principal Secretary of the School Education Department, issued a gazette notification to announce this development. As per the provisions of the Right to Education Act of 2011, students from grades 1 to 8 were previously assessed through continuous comprehensive evaluation. However, the education department has now decided to introduce examinations for the fifth and eighth classes.

According to the gazette published by the education department, students will be enrolled in age-appropriate classes up to the fifth grade. It will be mandatory for students to pass the annual examination designated for the fifth grade in order to progress to classes six to eight.

If a student fails to clear the fifth-grade examination, they will be retained in the fifth grade. The Maharashtra State Council of Educational Research and Training (SCERT) will be responsible for determining the annual examination, re-examination, and evaluation procedures for the fifth and eighth grades. In case a student fails to pass the initial examination, they will be provided with additional supplementary guidance. The re-examination will take place within two months from the announcement of the results of the annual examination. If the student fails the re-examination as well, they will be kept in either the fifth or eighth grade, respectively. It has been emphasized that no student shall be expelled from school until the completion of primary education.
