Pune, 30th January 2024: The ongoing survey to assess the backwardness of the Maratha community in Pune, as mandated by the Maharashtra government, has reached 66% completion. The survey, aimed at ensuring the continuation of reservation for the Maratha community, is being conducted by the State Backward Classes Commission, as ordered by the state government.

The survey, initiated on January 23, was part of the state government’s efforts to address the concerns regarding the Maratha community reservation. Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) had assigned 2000 employees to survey approximately 12 lakh households in the city. The original deadline for completing the survey was set for January 31.

Due to the enormity of the task and the need for additional resources, the PMC administration has formally requested a five-day extension from the Maharashtra government to ensure the thorough completion of the survey. The administration aims to cover all necessary aspects within the extended timeframe.

The survey progress reached 66% by Tuesday evening, with employees visiting 7 lakh 89 thousand households. Despite intensified efforts, it became evident that the initial deadline would be challenging to meet. As a result, PMC Commissioner Vikram Kumar stated that an extension of five days was requested, emphasizing that about 66% of the work had been completed.

Addressing the citizens, Commissioner Vikram Kumar urged them not to engage in misbehaviour with the survey employees who are diligently carrying out their responsibilities. There have been instances of citizens mistreating survey personnel while they perform their duties, prompting the commissioner to appeal for respectful behaviour from the public.

In response to the request, the state government has reportedly granted a two-day extension to PMC to complete the Maratha community survey. The administration continues to work diligently to meet the survey objectives and gather accurate data within the extended timeframe.
