Pune, 5th December 2024: In a concerning incident, marijuana (Ganja) was discovered in the hostel premises of Savitribai Phule Pune University (SPPU), leading to a case being registered against two students. The discovery has raised serious questions about the university’s hostel security and monitoring systems.
The incident came to light after a student reported seeing another student smoking marijuana in a room in Hostel Number Five. Acting on this complaint, the university’s security staff conducted an inspection and confirmed the claim. Subsequently, the two accused students were handed over to the police. A formal case was later registered by the university administration at Chatushrungi police station.
Dr. Jyoti Bhakere, the university registrar, confirmed the development, stating, “The case was filed with the police by the hostel warden. Further investigations are being conducted by the authorities. It should also be noted that the concerned student was not officially residing in the university’s hostel.”

In the previous incident, marijuana was also found in a university hostel, prompting protests from various political parties and student organizations demanding stricter regulations and improved security.
The recurrence of such incidents has raised concerns among the student community and the administration about the effectiveness of the university’s security measures. Authorities have assured that they are taking steps to prevent such issues in the future.
