New Delhi, 22nd October 2025: Tech giant Microsoft has announced exemptions for certain employees from its upcoming “return to office” mandate, clarifying that the policy will not apply to roles directly interacting with customers or partners. Sales and client-support staff, in particular, will no longer be required to report to the office daily.

According to internal communications obtained by the media, HR Head Theresa McHenry wrote in a memo to employees, “We recognize that each department’s work is different. Therefore, flexibility will be provided where needed.” The exemption is expected to benefit employees in commercial sales and solution engineering roles, where remote work can be effectively carried out.

For other staff, Microsoft had announced last month that employees in the Seattle area will be required to work from the office three days a week starting next spring. This policy is expected to be implemented across the US and other countries where Microsoft operates.

Tech Industry Tightens Remote Work Policies

Microsoft’s flexible approach comes as several other tech companies are restricting remote work.

  • Dell Technologies has mandated that its sales staff work from the office five days a week.
  • Amazon requires most employees to report to the office daily.
  • Google revised its “Work From Anywhere” policy earlier this year, removing the option for employees to work from other states or countries, which had previously been allowed for up to four weeks annually.

A July report by Jones Lang LaSalle noted that more than half of employees in Fortune 100 companies now work entirely from office locations. Microsoft’s approach differs by acknowledging the nature of specific roles and adopting in-office requirements only where necessary.
