Minister Chandrakant Patil Calls For Survey To Extend Pune Airport Runway For International Flights

Pune, 5th October 2023: In a move to bolster international aviation, Chandrakant Patil, the Minister of Higher and Technical Education, has called for a comprehensive survey to extend the runway at Pune Airport. The minister made this announcement during a review meeting at the airport.
The meeting was graced by several key officials, including Divisional Commissioner Saurabh Rao, Police Commissioner Retesh Kumaarr, District Collector Dr Rajesh Deshmukh, Pune Metropolitan Region Development Authority (PMRDA) Commissioner Rahul Mahiwal, and Pune Municipal Corporation Additional Commissioner Vikas Dhakne. Santosh Dhoke, the Pune Airport Director, was also present.
Minister Patil emphasized that the new terminal would provide ten parking bays equipped with aerobridges, increasing the number of flights to 218. He assured that the domestic air transport system would be adequately addressed. Alongside, he stressed the need for efforts to boost international aviation and called for necessary studies in this regard.
The minister revealed that a meeting would soon be convened involving the Maharashtra Chief Minister and Deputy Chief Minister to discuss expediting the work on Purandar Airport. He also urged for the acceleration of road work related to the new terminal.
Puen Airport Director Dhoke presented data on passenger traffic at Pune Airport. Approximately 30,000 passengers travel through the airport daily, including around 540 international passengers. In the fiscal year 2022-23, the airport served 8 million passengers through 59,451 flights. The passenger count is expected to double once the new terminal, which spans 51,595 square feet and is equipped with modern facilities, becomes operational.
The call for a survey to extend Pune Airport’s runway marks a significant step towards enhancing international aviation capabilities, aligning with the airport’s ambitious expansion plans.
