Pune, 19th February 2024: Pune Mahanagar Parivahan Mahamandal Limited (PMPML) is facing resistance from the Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) over its decision to procure 400 Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) buses, each measuring 12 meters in length. The controversy is escalating as MNS alleges potential financial losses of Rs 350 crore associated with the acquisition of these CNG buses.

PMPML recently issued a tender for the purchase of 400 CNG buses as part of its public transportation fleet expansion. However, the move has encountered opposition from MNS, which has raised concerns and objections to the choice of fuel and the financial implications.

MNS, in its objection, has asserted that the acquisition of CNG buses will result in a substantial financial loss amounting to Rs 350 crore. The party argues that this expenditure is avoidable and questions the feasibility of such a substantial investment, urging PMPML to reconsider its decision.

Adding another dimension to their objection, MNS has demanded that PMPML reconsider its choice of fuel and opt for electric buses instead of CNG. The party contends that embracing electric buses aligns with environmental concerns and advances the city’s commitment to sustainable public transportation.

In response to their reservations, MNS has taken formal action by filing a complaint with Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) Commissioner Vikram Kumar and the Comptroller and Auditor General of India (CAG). The complaint urges the authorities to intervene and reconsider the decision to purchase CNG buses, citing the alleged financial burden and advocating for a more eco-friendly alternative.
