Monsoon Advances Across Mumbai, Pune, Bengaluru and Northeastern States: IMD

Pune, 26th May 2025: The Southwest Monsoon has made significant progress, covering more parts of Maharashtra—including Mumbai and Pune—as well as Karnataka, Telangana, Andhra Pradesh, and several Northeastern states, according to the India Meteorological Department (IMD).
KS Hosalikar, Head of Climate Research and Services at IMD, Pune, said, “The Southwest Monsoon has further advanced into additional parts of the central Arabian Sea and Maharashtra, including Mumbai and Pune, as well as Bengaluru and other parts of Karnataka. It has also progressed into remaining parts of Tamil Nadu, more areas of Telangana and Andhra Pradesh, parts of Westcentral and North Bay of Bengal, and further into the Northeast—including Tripura, Manipur, Nagaland, Arunachal Pradesh, Mizoram, and parts of Assam and Meghalaya—as of May 26.”
The IMD has updated the Northern Limit of Monsoon (NLM), which now passes through:
Arabian Sea (17.0°N/55°E to 18.5°N/70°E),
Mainland India: Mumbai, Pune, Sholapur, Kalaburagi, Mahbubnagar, Kavali,
Eastern Corridor: 16.5°N/83°E, 19°N/86°E, 21°N/89°E, Agartala, Golpara, and ends at 28.5°N/89°E.
“Conditions remain favourable for further advance of the Southwest Monsoon into the remaining parts of central Arabian Sea, more areas of Maharashtra, Karnataka, Telangana, Andhra Pradesh, the rest of the North Bay of Bengal, and the remaining northeastern states. It is also expected to cover parts of Sub-Himalayan West Bengal and Sikkim within the next three days,” Hosalikar added.
This early and widespread advancement brings much-needed relief amid rising summer temperatures and sets a promising tone for the upcoming Kharif cropping season across several regions.
