Baramati, 26th May 2025: Heavy rains over the past few days have severely disrupted life in Baramati, Daund, and Indapur talukas of Pune district, causing widespread damage to agriculture and infrastructure. While no loss of life has been reported, the devastation to crops and property has been significant. Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar began his on-ground review of the situation in Baramati on Monday (26th May) morning.

Baramati has received nearly 7 inches of rainfall in the last three days—half of its annual average of 14 inches—leading to a flood-like situation. In many areas, including homes and streets, rainwater has accumulated, and the breach of the Nira Left Canal further aggravated the crisis. Power supply was disrupted in several regions.

Ajit Pawar visited flood-affected areas such as Kanheri-Katewadi, Kanheri Van, Kanheri village, Pimpali, Katewadi, and Dhekalwadi, interacting with villagers and farmers to understand their plight. He directed officials to carry out immediate surveys of the losses and submit detailed reports to the government.

Speaking to the media, Pawar said, “It rained as much in one day as it usually does in an entire year. My mother told me she hasn’t seen such rain in 51 years.” He also confirmed coordination with District Collectors of Pune and Satara for damage assessment and relief efforts.

Pawar visited the Nira Left Canal breach site and assessed the condition of three buildings in the Baramati MIDC area that are at risk. He instructed the Municipal Council to conduct structural audits before determining if they are safe for habitation. Further inspections are scheduled in the flood-hit villages of Khandaj, Sangavi, and Late, as well as in the town of Shetfalghade.

The Deputy CM issued several directives during his visit:

– Widen narrow streams in vulnerable areas to prevent future flooding.
– Clean main and subsidiary canals to ensure proper drainage.
– Provide immediate relief to people in need.
– Conduct prompt surveys of crop and property damage and submit reports to the state.
– Implement drainage solutions in areas where water is stagnant.

Ajit Pawar was accompanied by top officials, including District Collector Jitendra Dudi, Sub-Divisional Officer Vaibhav Navadkar, Additional SP Ganesh Biradar, SDPO Sudarshan Rathod, Tehsildar Ganesh Shinde, and engineers from the Public Works and Irrigation Departments.

As the rains continue, the administration is on high alert, and Pawar has assured that all necessary measures will be taken to restore normalcy and support the affected residents.
