Maharashtra Makes Fee Display Mandatory at Colleges to Ensure Transparent Admissions
Pune, 18th July 2026: In a move to ensure transparency in the college admission process and prevent the overcharging of students, the Maharashtra government has made it mandatory for all colleges to prominently display detailed admission fee information on notice boards at their entrances.
Higher and Technical Education Minister Chandrakant Patil has directed colleges across the state to display the approved fee structure and ensure that no charges beyond the prescribed amount are collected from students. The initiative aims to protect students and parents from financial exploitation during the admission season.
Students seeking admission have been advised to pay only the fees approved by the respective university or the Fee Regulating Authority. Colleges have also been instructed to display updated fee details on their notice boards and include them in their admission brochures before the admission process begins.
The Directorate of Higher Education stated that it will be the responsibility of colleges to ensure that prospective students are informed of the approved fee structure before admission. Universities and Regional Joint Directors of Higher Education have been directed to verify whether colleges have complied with the directive by displaying the required information. Any complaints regarding excess fee collection or non-compliance will be investigated, and the concerned institutions will be held accountable.
The Directorate has also warned that failure to comply with the directive could result in the salaries of staff at defaulting colleges being withheld. Regional Joint Directors have been instructed to initiate appropriate action against institutions that violate the order.
According to the Directorate of Higher Education, 1,227 of the state’s 1,239 aided colleges have already complied by installing admission fee display boards on their campuses. The state government said the initiative is expected to bring greater transparency to the admission process while safeguarding the interests of students and parents.
