Pune, 17th January 2025: A 25-year-old woman has been sentenced to life imprisonment and fined ₹10,000 for murdering her young daughter in Pune’s Warje area. The verdict was delivered by Principal District and Sessions Judge Mahendra Mahajan.

Anita Sanjay Salve was found guilty of killing her daughter during a domestic dispute with her husband on 4th February 2016. According to the police, Salve smothered her child with a shawl, causing her to suffocate, and then attempted suicide by hanging herself from a ceiling fan.

The prosecution, led by Additional Public Prosecutor Milind Datrange, presented 20 witnesses during the trial. Salve confessed to the police that she killed her daughter out of concern for the child’s future and attempted suicide due to marital issues and neglect by her in-laws.

Judge Mahajan, taking into account the severity of the crime committed against an innocent child, sentenced Salve to life imprisonment. The defence’s plea for leniency—citing the accused’s non-criminal background and the unusual nature of the case—was rejected.

The case was initially registered at Warje Malwadi Police Station in Pune, with the police filing charges following Salve’s arrest.
