Pune, 8th February 2024: Over the past few years, there has been a significant increase in the number of passengers at Pune Airport. The presence of Indian Air Force fighter jets at this airport is also notable.

This has led to discussions about the possibility of developing additional airports in other parts of the district to ease passenger congestion. Shiv Sena leader Shrirang Barne raised this concern during a session in the Lok Sabha. In response, Union Minister of Civil Aviation Jyotiraditya Scindia addressed the issue in Marathi.

Barne pointed out that the population of Pune, Pimpri-Chinchwad city, and the district has surpassed two crore. Pune is renowned as an educational, commercial, IT, and technology hub, attracting domestic and international travelers. International and domestic air traffic has commenced from the airport, with the number of passengers increasing substantially, positioning Pune Airport among the top ten in the country. Given that it serves as the main base for the Indian Air Force, flight schedules are managed accordingly, resulting in a high frequency of military aircraft.

In response, Minister Scindia assured in Marathi, “I am a Maharashtrian. It is my commitment to contribute to the growth and development of Pune. The construction of the new integrated terminal at Pune Airport has been completed. The inauguration will take place within two to three weeks. Discussions will be held with the state government regarding the second airport. The state government needs to identify suitable land and provide us with the necessary information so that we can take appropriate action. We have received a proposal regarding a specific location, and we will consider it.”

However, there are some obstacles, particularly concerning farmers. Therefore, it is the responsibility of the state government to address these concerns. Once proposals are submitted, appropriate action will be taken. This news brings hope for improved air connectivity and infrastructure development, further enhancing Pune’s status as a prominent city in India.
