Pune/Mumbai, 6th April 2026: In a major move aimed at easing traffic congestion and improving travel between two of Maharashtra’s busiest cities, the Mumbai–Pune Expressway is set to be expanded to 10 lanes.

The decision has been taken by the Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation (MSRDC) to address the frequent traffic build-up on the expressway and ensure faster and smoother travel for commuters. The Mumbai–Pune Expressway is one of the busiest highways in the country and often witnesses long queues of vehicles, especially during weekends and holidays.

According to MSRDC Managing Director Anil Gaikwad, the expansion work will begin after the monsoon. The project aims to significantly reduce traffic congestion and enhance the overall travel experience between Mumbai and Pune.

MSRDC has set a target to complete the widening project within the next three years, with the proposed deadline around 2029–30. To avoid major disruptions to traffic during construction, the work will be carried out in phases.

Once the project is completed, the travel time between Mumbai and Pune is expected to reduce further, providing relief to thousands of daily commuters and transport operators who rely on the expressway.

The large-scale expansion will require substantial funding. To finance the project, MSRDC plans to raise funds through loans from financial institutions.

Meanwhile, to repay the project loans, the authorities are considering extending the toll collection period on the Mumbai–Pune Expressway by 15 years. If approved, the current toll collection deadline of 2045 could be extended until 2060.
