Mumbai, 29th May 2021: Maharashtra Health Minister Rajesh Tope on Friday announced that the patients undergoing Mucormycosis treatment shall be given free treatment in the state. The patients are covered under Mahatma Jyotiba Phule Jan Arogya Yojana (MJPJAY). Under this scheme, patients are given free treatment till the cover of 1.5 lakh rupees. The state government has now decided to cover the bill amount exceeding 1.5 lakh for Mucormycosis patients.

As the Black Fungus cases have risen across the country, multiple states including Maharashtra, Rajasthan, Telangana, Bihar, West Bengal, and Karnataka have notified it under the Epidemic Diseases Act. Maharashtra has seen over 2500 Mucormycosis cases till now including over 550 cases in Pune district. The treatment has been costly so far and there has been a demand to regulate the rates of the treatment.

Doctors and health experts are claiming that the over-use of steroids during Covid treatment, low immunity, and immune suppression after COVID-19 recovery has made people more prone to getting infected by Black Fungus.
