Pune, 15th March 2026: A travelling ticket inspector (TTI) from the Central Railway’s Mumbai division has collected more than Rs 1 crore in fines from passengers travelling without valid tickets during the current financial year, railway officials said.

According to officials, Mohammad Shams Chand, a TTI from the Mumbai division’s open detail batch, detected 11,483 cases of ticket irregularities between April 1, 2025 and March 15, 2026. During this period, he collected Rs 1,00,38,505 in penalties and charges through ticket inspections.

With this, Chand has become the first ticket checking staff member in Central Railway to cross the Rs 1 crore mark in fines in the 2025–26 financial year, officials said.

Railway authorities said his performance has not only helped prevent revenue loss but has also boosted the image of the ticket checking department and set an example for other staff members.

Central Railway has appealed to passengers to travel only with valid tickets purchased through authorised channels such as booking counters at railway stations, authorised vendors, automatic ticket vending machines (ATVMs) or the official website of Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation.
Passengers can also book tickets through the Rail One mobile application, officials said.

Reiterating its zero-tolerance policy against ticketless travel, the railway administration said strict checks will continue to ensure a comfortable and lawful travel experience for passengers.
