‘Namvistar Din’ Celebrated at Savitribai Phule Pune University

Pune, 9th August 2026: ‘Namvistar Din’ (University Renaming Day) was celebrated at Savitribai Phule Pune University (SPPU) on Sunday to commemorate the renaming of the university in honour of social reformer and educationist Savitribai Phule.

During a commemorative ceremony, Vice-Chancellor Prof. Dr. Suresh Gosavi paid tribute to Krantijyoti Savitribai Phule by offering a floral garland at her statue on the university campus.

Pro-Vice-Chancellor Prof. Dr. Parag Kalkar, Senate member Prof. Dr. Rajendra Ghode, Director of the Board of Examinations and Evaluation Dr. Rajendra Talware, Deans Dr. Sadanand Bansode, Dr. Raosaheb Latpate and Dr. Dhananjay Mandlik, Heads of Departments Prof. Dr. Vijay Khare and Prof. Dr. Vilas Adhav, and Head of the Krantivir Birsa Munda Chair Dr. Avinash Ade were among those present.
Several department heads, professors, officers, staff members and students also attended the programme.

The programme recalled the university’s renaming on August 9, 2014. The decision was seen as a recognition of Savitribai Phule’s contribution to women’s education and the movement associated with Bhidewada, where she and Jyotirao Phule began their pioneering efforts in girls’ education in 1848.

Participants also took a pledge to contribute to the university’s continued development while upholding the values and legacy of Savitribai Phule.
