National Science Foundation Energy Smart Electronic Systems (ES2) Centre inaugurated at VIT Pune, in Collaboration with Binghamton University of New York

17th February was a red-letter day in the history of Pune, known as Oxford of the East. On this day, leadership team from the renowned Binghamton University (State University of New York) flew down specially to Pune to inaugurate the International Site of the National Science Foundation Energy Smart Electronic Systems (ES2) Centre at Vishwakarma Institute of Technology (VIT) in collaboration Binghamton University, This Center is being developed for last three years.

The leadership team from Binghamton University includes:

  • Prof Bahgat Sammakia (Vice President for Research)
  • Prof Krishnaswami Srihari (Executive Vice Provost for International Initiatives and Chief Global Affairs Officer; Dean Thomas J Watson School of Engineering and Applied Science )
  • Prof Paul Chiarot (Assistant Professor, Department of Mechanical Engineering)
  • Ms.Elizabeth Kradjian (Assistant Dean Watson School of Engineering and Applied Science)

The center was inaugurated by Vice President Sammakia,  Dean Hari Srihari inaugurated and the delegates from Binghamton along with Bharat Agarwal (Managing Trustee); B.B. Lohiya (Vice Chairman); Prof. Rajesh Jalnekar (Director, VIT Pune),Prof. Siddharth Jabade (Dean Alumni & International Relations, VIT, Pune);Prof Manasi Patwardhan (Dean Research and Development).  The member companies delegates of the center were present:

Says Vice President Sammakia “We are pleased to inaugurate the first international site of the National Science Foundation (NSF) Center for Energy Smart Electronic Systems (ES2) in collaboration with Binghamton University, State University of New York at Vishwakarma Institute of Technology, Pune.

A National Science Foundation (NSF) Industry/University Cooperation Research Center (I/UCRC) in Energy-Smart Electronic Systems (ES2) at Binghamton University, ES2 develops methodologies for efficiently operating electronic systems, including data centers, by controlling cooling resources and managing workloads to achieve optimal energy consumption. I/UCRC program is very highly recognized and regarded in the US and is considered to be the most successful program since 1973 as far as getting academia and industry working together to make a positive and broad impact on society.”

 

Says Dean Hari Srihari “There is a longstanding collaboration between Binghamton University and VI, Pune for last six years.  This collaborative partnership has indeed withstood the test of time, and has grown into a broad and deep academic relationship. The recent (formal) inauguration is indeed the jewel-in-the-crown of our joint academic endeavors.

Says Bharat Agarwal, “We are proud and honoured to be associated with Binghamton University, which is known to collaborate with industry and do research so that it benefits the industries and the students get a hands on experience. This is the first time that the international site of the Center of Binghamton has been set up outside of the USA, thus putting Pune on the world map”.

That’s not all – also this is perhaps the first time in Pune that an industry-educational institute will work together to find solutions to save energy, which is the top priority of the planet earth today.

The pioneering initial support for this center is provided by Dr. Sandeep Tonapi (Founder Director, Anveshak Technology and Knowledge Solutions) who is an alumnus of Binghamton University.

 

“The aim of this collaborative center is to provide a platform to meaningfully collaborate with industry to address real life problems and provide evidence based solutions with well-defined deliverables and time frame. This will provide students and faculty a unique experience of pragmatic and practical problems” explains Director Rajesh Jalnekar.

Binghamton University, State University of New York, and its partners: The University of Texas at Arlington, Villanova University and The Georgia Institute of Technology have established this I/URC in the area of energy-smart electronic systems. The I/UCRC in Energy-Smart Electronic Systems works in partnership with industry and academia to develop systematic methodologies for operating electronic systems and cooling equipment synergistically, as dynamic self-sensing and self-regulating systems that are predictive, stable and verified in real time. The center brings together computer scientists, mechanical and electrical engineers in a synergistic multi-disciplinary team to address these issues. The Center members are Facebook, Bloomberg, IBM, Comcast, CommScope, Corning, Degree Controls, DVL, Future Facilities, Internap, Mestex, MicroCool, Panduit, QuantaCool, Rambus, Sealco, Steel ORCA, Triad, Verizon. With over 20 industry members, the goal is to reduce energy costs by one-third.

The unique feature of this center is the member companies avail of the following benefits :

  • The industry partners / core members will get an access to the network ofBinghamton University, The University of Texas at Arlington, Villanova University and Georgia Institute of Technology
  • The graduate / PhD students will work on the identified problem from the respective partner company wherein faculty from Binghamton and Vishwakarma will be involved along with the partner company representation
  • The member company will have access to research, publication and facilities from the entire network of the Universities  It will collapse time cycle for research to results due to dedicated involvement ofthe students who will work full time on the project, use of resources, expertise and faculty from the Universities
