Naval Veteran’s Organ Donation Saves Five Lives in Pune
Pune, 28th November 2024: A 33-year-old naval veteran gave new lease of life to 5 people by donating his organs in the Southern Command Hospital, Pune. After being declared brain dead after brain stem failure, his family was counselled as per defined protocol about the possibility of organ donation. The family consented to the noble deed immediately.
On consent, the transplant coordinator immediately initiated the process of information. The liver was received and transported to the Army Hospital (R&R) while the heart was received and transported to a hospital in Mumbai.
Both the Kidneys were simultaneously transplanted to much needy 31-year-old veteran and an 18-year-old renal failure patient at the same hospital. The cornea was received by the Eye Bank at Armed Forces Medical College.
The tasks were all accomplished by the highly trained professionals of the Command Hospital (Southern Command) Pune which included the transport coordinator, ICU Staff, multispeciality Doctors and Nurses under the guidance of Commandant, Command Hospital, Pune, Major General B Nambiar, Sena Medal, Vishisht Seva Medal.
The noble effort in organ donation was also ably assisted by the Military and Maharashtra police who provided the crucial green corridor from the airport to the hospital at very short notice.
