NCW Takes Cognisance of Pune Case Where Husband Allegedly Poured Acid on Wife’s Private Parts, Action Taken Report Sought from Police Within 7 Days
Pune, 23rd May 2026: The National Commission for Women (NCW) has taken suo motu cognisance of the alleged acid attack and domestic violence case in Pune district in which a man allegedly poured floor-cleaning acid on his wife’s private parts on suspicion of an extramarital affair and confined her inside their house without medical treatment.
In a statement issued on Saturday, the Commission described the incident as “deeply disturbing” and strongly condemned the alleged act of domestic cruelty and violence against women.
NCW chairperson Vijaya Rahatkar has written to the Director General of Police, Maharashtra, directing immediate, stringent and time-bound action in the case. Rahatkar has sought a detailed Action Taken Report (ATR) within seven days.
The NCW has sought details regarding the FIR registered in the matter, sections invoked under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), the status of investigation, arrest and custodial interrogation of the accused, medical treatment and forensic examination of the survivor, recovery of the chemical substance allegedly used in the crime, and measures taken for the woman’s safety, protection and rehabilitation.
According to police, the incident took place on April 20 in the Uruli Kanchan area of Pune district but came to light nearly a month later after the 25-year-old woman approached police on May 15 and lodged a complaint against her husband.
Police said the accused, who works as a welder, allegedly suspected his wife of having an affair. “He returned home from work and started assaulting her in a fit of rage. He then allegedly poured floor-cleaning acid on her genitals and threatened her with dire consequences if she disclosed the incident to anyone,” police said.
Investigators said the woman repeatedly pleaded with her husband to take her to a hospital, but he allegedly prevented her from seeking medical treatment and kept her confined at home.
According to police, the woman later managed to reach her parents’ house in Solapur district, where she narrated the incident to her family before returning to Pune and approaching the police.
Based on her complaint, Uruli Kanchan Police Station registered a case against the accused under Sections 115 (voluntarily causing hurt), 351(2) (criminal intimidation), and other relevant provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita.
The NCW said crimes involving acid attacks, domestic torture and violence against women are heinous in nature and must invite the strictest legal action.
