Nepal Government Threatens Not To Give NOC

Kathmandu, 19th February 2025: The Nepal government has reacted to the death of a student in a private university in Odisha under suspicious circumstances. The body of Prakriti Lamsala, a 20-year-old BTech student at Kalinga Institute of Industrial Technology (KIIT), was found in her hostel room on February 16’s afternoon. This suicide has led to major unrest and a bigger matter of discussion in Nepal’s Parliament.

The Nepal government is showing major concern over the matter and expressed it by saying in a statement that it may suspend the issuance of No Objection Certificates (NOC) to its students wishing to attend any university or educational institution in Odisha in the future.

The whole matter behind the suicide is Prakriti Lamsala, who was a resident of Nepal studying at KIIT, committed suicide after being harassed by her batchmate and ex-boyfriend Adhik Srivastava. This issue was raised in Nepal’s Parliament, where several MPs, including Shirish Khanal, Bina Lama, Sita Mirror, Sher Bahadur Kunwar, and Shanti Bika, have raised the issue and at the same time, the bosh of the Nepali student is handed over to her father by the police after the postmortem at AIIMS Bhubaneswar on Tuesday.

Students staged a protest demanding justice for Prakriti Lamsala, and the video of the demonstration is going viral on social media. At the same time, it is alleged that the security and faculty members of KIIT misbehaved with the students involved in the protest. Following this, the director of the girl’s hostel and an associate professor in the computer science department were suspended.

A criminal case has been registered against the accused student, Adhik Srivastava, who has been arrested and is in judicial custody, according to the Odisha police.

Nepalese Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli has said that two officials of the Nepalese embassy in India have been sent to Odisha to help Nepalese students. He has also said that students have the option to either stay in the hostel or return home according to their priority. Nepal’s Foreign Minister Arju Rana Deuba said that our government is constantly discussing this matter with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of India. The Government of India has assured that it will take the necessary steps to ensure the safety and security of students from Nepal.
