New Talegaon-Uruli Freight Line Expected To Reduce Pressure On Pune Railway Station
Pune, 26th December 2024: The Detailed Project Report (DPR) for the new Talegaon-Uruli railway line, being prepared by Indian Railways, has reached its final stage. This railway line is specifically designed for freight trains only and will soon be submitted to the Ministry of Railways for approval. Officials are confident that once approved, the schedule for passenger trains at Pune Railway Station will become smoother.
Currently, 72 long-distance passenger trains operate daily from Pune Railway Station, alongside 80 freight trains running in South India. Long-distance passenger trains primarily operate on the Lonavala and Pune-Daund Railway Routes, where freight trains also run. This has added pressure on the Pune Railway Station, often requiring frequent changes to the schedules of passenger trains.
To allow another train to pass through the station regularly, other trains must wait at a crossing some distance away, controlled by the signal system. When space becomes available on the railway track at the station, the passenger train arrives, and passengers must wait. To address this, Indian Railways is preparing a Detailed Project Report (DPR) for a new track between Talegaon and Uruli. This new route will be specifically for freight trains and will run via Chakan-Ranjangaon, spanning 70 kilometres. The expected cost of the project is Rs 7,000 crore.
The report is in its final stage and will be completed in the next two months before being sent to the Railway Ministry for approval. Indu Dubey, Pune Divisional Railway Manager, stated, “A detailed project report is being prepared for the new route from Talegaon to Uruli to facilitate the movement of goods trains. Once the report is finalized, it will be sent to the board for approval. If this route is implemented, the schedule for passenger trains will be smoother, and the pressure on Pune Railway Station will be reduced.”
