Pune, 26th December 2024: The Pune Regional Transport Office (RTO) has launched a drive to check for drunk driving ahead of the New Year. Special teams have been assigned to monitor busy roads across the city from 25th to 31st December, with the support of Pune Police. During this period, many people celebrate the end of the year, and drunk driving incidents have been reported. Accidents and traffic jams are common during this time, prompting a five-day inspection campaign this year, informed Sub Regional Transport Officer Swapnil Bhosale.

The drive will be conducted across Pune city, with barriers set up at busy intersections and key roads. RTO teams will be deployed at these locations. Drivers will be tested using breath analyzers, and their vehicle documents, driving licenses, and registration papers will also be checked. If a driver is found to be under the influence, legal action will be taken, Bhosale explained.

Minor drivers will also be checked, and parents are urged not to allow minors to drive. “No one should drive after consuming alcohol, and everyone should carry their vehicle documents and follow the rules,” Bhosale appealed.

Sub Regional Transport Officer Swapnil Bhosale further said, “Every year, bars, pubs, and hotels in Pune city are allowed to remain open until late at night. Parties are organized at open grounds and special venues. This year, too, pubs have been permitted to stay open late. The possibility of accidents due to alcohol consumption cannot be ruled out. In this context, instructions have been issued to conduct checks at these special locations.”
