Ahilyanagar, 14th May 2026: The National Green Tribunal (NGT), Principal Bench, New Delhi, has transferred a case related to alleged pollution and environmental degradation at Kapurwadi Talaon (Lake) in Ahilyanagar to the Western Zone Bench in Pune. The matter is scheduled for hearing on June 2, 2026.

The case was registered after environmental activist Jaymala Dhankikar filed a complaint highlighting alleged dumping of plastic waste, solid waste, construction debris, and other pollutants around the lake area.

According to the NGT order, the tribunal observed that the matter falls within the jurisdiction of the Western Zone Bench at Pune and directed the registry to list the case there for further proceedings.

The complaint also raised concerns regarding cement concrete structures, paving, and hard landscaping activities around the embankment, alleging that these activities could damage the lake’s ecological balance and natural hydrology.

Speaking on the issue, applicant Jaymala Dhankikar said, “Kapurwadi Talaon is not merely a local water body but a shared natural and cultural heritage. Immediate intervention is essential to prevent irreversible environmental damage and ensure its preservation for future generations.”

She further alleged that the condition around the lake has become dangerous for local residents. “People and young boys are at risk of losing their lives due to the present condition near the lake. I had earlier filed a complaint with the Maharashtra Pollution Control Board (PCB), and the PCB had also issued a letter to the Gram Panchayat, but no action was taken. After that, I approached the National Green Tribunal,” she said.

The NGT has directed the applicant to remain present physically or through video conferencing during the hearing and submit all relevant material before the Pune bench.
