No Irregularities in 433 Gun Licences Issued by Pune Police: CM
Pune, 2nd April 2026: The Maharashtra government has found no violations in the issuance of 433 firearm licences granted by the Pune police during the tenure of former commissioner Amitabh Gupta and then additional commissioner Jalinder Supekar, Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis informed the state Assembly.
In a written response to a starred question raised by BJP MLA Suresh Dhas, the Chief Minister said that all licences issued during the period were scrutinised and found to be in compliance with the provisions of the Arms Act, 1959, and the Arms Rules, 2016. The reply, submitted in July 2025, was tabled during the recently concluded assembly session.
According to the government’s statement, the licensing process followed due procedure, with no irregularities detected in any of the 433 cases reviewed.
Earlier, during a visit to Pune in May 2025, Fadnavis had ordered a review of firearm licences issued by the city police, stating that any licence obtained through fraudulent documentation would be cancelled.
The direction had come in the wake of controversy surrounding firearm licences issued to associates of the Hagawane brothers, Shashank and Sushil, who were arrested in connection with the Vaishnavi Hagawane dowry death case. Police had subsequently revoked those licences after it emerged that they were allegedly obtained using misleading residential details, despite the applicant having prior criminal cases registered against him.
