Pune, 2nd April 2026: The Pune Municipal Corporation on Thursday launched a citywide drive against unauthorised overhead cables, clearing nearly 10 km of hanging optical fibre network on the first day of action along the Satara Road stretch.

The crackdown began on April 1, with joint teams from multiple civic departments initiating action early in the morning. Backed by police security, the operation led to the removal of two truckloads of installed cables.

Civic officials said unauthorised overhead cables had spread extensively across the city, hanging from flyovers, trees, streetlights, traffic signals, bus stops, as well as private and government buildings. Apart from posing safety risks and causing accidents, the unchecked network was also leading to revenue losses for the civic body.

Following directions issued after a recent standing committee meeting, the PMC has prioritised removing illegal cables and regulating the network to improve safety and revenue collection.

On Thursday, action was carried out in areas including Adinath Society, Pushpa Mangal Karyalaya, Utsav building, Rajarshi Shahu Maharaj Society, Punyainagar and Dhankawadi along Satara Road. The drive involved teams from the electrical and anti-encroachment departments, supported by wiremen, labourers and hydraulic cranes.

PMC Commissioner Naval Kishore Ram said the drive will continue across the city and that a comprehensive policy to regulate cable installations will be introduced soon. Officials added that the action will be intensified in the coming days to address safety concerns posed by hanging cables.
