Pune, 29th May 2021: Against the backdrop of the corona, the Savitribai Phule Pune University (SPPU) administration has decided to extend the tenure of the assistant professors as a special case. Assistant professors appointed on a contract or temporary basis in various academic departments of the university have been given this extension.

Many of the assistant professors faced challenges as their contracts were to expire soon. However, these assistant professors have been given extension till the university fills the posts with new appointments. Pune University Registrar Dr Prafulla Pawar has released a circular in this regard.

Assistant professors are appointed by the department for 11 months on a contract or a temporary period. In the current academic year, the term of these professors expires on May 31st. However, due to the second wave of Corona, this academic session has been postponed. Hence, the syllabus of these teachers in many departments has not been completed. Therefore, the examination and evaluation process has not yet concluded. In such a situation, the expiration of the term of the assistant professors provided temporarily or on a contract basis was likely to create many problems. On that background, the university extended the term of these professors.

“As a special case, the deadline has been extended till July 31, 2021, or for filling up the posts of Assistant Professors sanctioned for the academic year 2021-22. But it must be noted that the new appointment process must be completed after July 31, 2021,” Pawar said.
