Pune, 11th May 2022: The Maharashtra State Road Transport Corporation (MSRTC) will shortly begin operating electric buses across the state. On June 1, the first e-bus will travel from Pune to Ahmednagar, commemorating the organization’s founding day.

These electric buses, dubbed ‘Shivai’, will be introduced in stages. By June-July, 150 electric buses would be added to the MSRTC fleet.

Under the central government’s Faster Adoption and Manufacturing of Hybrid and Electric Vehicles (FAME) scheme, MSRTC would receive 1,000 electric buses and 2,000 CNG buses in stages.

“We have not yet received the formal circular or directive regarding the June 1 programme, but as it has been reported from the headquarters, we have already begun preparations. On June 1, the division will receive its first electric bus, which will run from Pune to Ahmednagar,” said the MSRTC Pune divisional controller, Ramakant Gaikwad.

He added, “The regular celebration of MSRTC foundation day would be held in the division across 12 depots.”

The official said the MSRTC was established on June 1, 1948, with the inaugural bus service between Pune and Ahmednagar. Since then, the organisation has expanded across Maharashtra, with 248 depots.
