Pune, 24th October 2023: A woman employed as a manager in a prominent company in Pune has fallen prey to an online fraud orchestrated through the ‘Telegram’ app.

The victim, residing at Tingre Nagar, lodged a complaint at Vishrantwadi Police Station, after she paid Rs 26.8 lakhs to the fraudster.

According to Senior Police Inspector Dattatray Bhapkar, the fraudulent activities transpired between August 10, 2023, and the present date. She, contacted online by an unidentified person using a Telegram ID, was enticed with a fake hotel reservation job that promised lucrative pay. Initially receiving some funds for their participation, she was subsequently asked to transfer money to a bank account for another purported job. The scheme continued with her transferring funds to multiple accounts, under the false pretext of an ongoing work arrangement.

As the fraud unfolded, the accused claimed a scam had occurred, demanding an additional Rs 34 lakh for rectification. It was at this point that she realized the deception and reported the incident to the Vishrantwadi police. An investigation has been launched into the case, with Senior Police Inspector Dattatraya Bhapkar leading the efforts.

In a related incident, Raja Vijay Murthy, a resident of Wanwadi, filed a complaint at Wanwadi Police Station against the Telegram account holder Anjali Patidar and the UPI ID holder of Ujjivan Small Finance Bank. Murthy was similarly contacted by the Telegram ID holder, who presented various online tasks promising substantial returns.

After gaining Murthy’s trust, the fraudsters coerced him into making payments on the UPI ID of Ujjivan Small Finance Bank, totaling Rs 1 lakh 71 thousand. Despite expectations of a refund, Murthy found himself a victim of financial fraud.

An application has been filed at the cyber police station, leading to the registration of a case after inquiry. Investigations are ongoing to trace and apprehend the culprits involved in these fraudulent activities.
