Over 100 mm Rainfall in Chinchwad, Rain Alerts Issued for Pune Region

Pune, 21st May 2025: Heavy pre-monsoon showers lashed Pune and surrounding areas on Tuesday night, leading to widespread waterlogging, traffic snarls, and disruptions in daily life across the city. The rain was accompanied by intense thunder and lightning, surprising many residents with its monsoon-like intensity.
According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), this pattern of weather is part of an early pre-monsoon phase driven by atmospheric and oceanic changes.
“We are witnessing early westerly winds, which are bringing in significant moisture from the Arabian Sea,” said a senior IMD official in Pune. “This is typical of the pre-monsoon season, but what stands out this year is the favourable global indicators — the Indian Ocean Dipole and the weakening El Niño — which point towards a strong and timely monsoon.”
Monsoon Arrival Likely Soon
The IMD has forecast that conditions are becoming favourable for the southwest monsoon to hit Kerala within the next 4-5 days — close to its usual onset date of June 1. Once it arrives in Kerala, the monsoon typically advances northwards over the next few weeks.
In the meantime, Pune and much of Maharashtra remain on yellow and orange alerts for more rainfall in the coming days. The IMD has issued orange alerts for the ghat regions of Pune, Satara, and Kolhapur, warning of heavy to very heavy rainfall and potential hazards including falling trees and lightning strikes.
“Residents, especially those living in hilly and low-lying areas, should stay alert. Gusty winds may also bring down weak structures,” the IMD advisory stated.
