Pune: PMC Reserves 50 Beds at Naidu Hospital Amid Rising Covid Concerns

Pune, 21st May 2025: In response to a spike in Covid-19 cases in several parts of the country, the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has preemptively set aside 50 beds at Naidu Infectious Diseases Hospital, officials said on Tuesday.
Although Pune currently has no active Covid patients admitted to any hospital, the civic body has taken precautionary measures to stay prepared in the event of a surge.
“We don’t have any active Covid-19 cases in city hospitals as of now,” said Dr. Nina Borade, Chief of PMC’s Health Department. “In fact, the only patient we had this month has been discharged after making a full recovery on May 15.”
Dr. Borade confirmed that PMC held a review meeting with medical officers and representatives from private hospitals. “We’ve asked all private healthcare facilities to report any admissions related to Covid or flu-like symptoms immediately. While we await fresh guidelines from the central and state health authorities, it’s important for citizens to remain cautious,” she said.
PMC has not resumed Covid testing in its public hospitals yet, but Borade said a decision on restarting testing or isolation protocols will depend on official instructions from the state’s Public Health Department.
“We are monitoring the situation closely,” she added. “If required, necessary action will be taken swiftly.”
Despite the World Health Organization declaring an end to the global Covid emergency in May 2023, the virus continues to circulate in endemic form. State health department officials have confirmed that only three active cases have been reported in Maharashtra at present, all of which involve patients recovering in home isolation with mild symptoms.
