Pune, June 3, 2023: MP Shrirang Barne, representing the Maval constituency, has taken a proactive stance to combat the pollution of Pavana and Indrayani rivers in Pimpri-Chinchwad city. Identifying overflow drains as the primary culprits behind river pollution, Barne has called for immediate action to prevent further contamination. In a recent meeting with municipal and regional authorities, as well as representatives from various organizations and concerned citizens, Barne proposed blocking the drains that originate from the river’s source, ensuring that only treated water is discharged into the rivers.
The meeting, attended by Municipal Commissioner Shekhar Singh, PMRDA Commissioner Rahul Mahiwal, and other officials, highlighted the pressing need to address this environmental concern. MP Barne stressed the importance of raising public awareness about river cleanliness through comprehensive campaigns in the villages along the river. He urged the participation of village heads, members, gram sevaks (village officials), and schools in spreading awareness about the significance of maintaining a clean river environment. Additionally, Barne emphasized the necessity of implementing sewage treatment within the municipal and PMRDA limits, while also discussing water treatment in affected areas such as Talegaon Dabhade and Dehu Road Cantonment Board with the Collector.
The discharge of untreated sewage from MIDC industries directly into the river basin was also a point of concern during the meeting. Barne announced plans to meet with Industry Minister Uday Samant to request that the relevant authorities treat the water within the MIDC. Recognizing the urgency of the situation, regular monthly meetings will be held to monitor progress and take decisive action to restore the health of the Pavana and Indrayani rivers. MP Barne reiterated his unwavering commitment to this cause, aiming to set an inspiring example for the entire nation through his relentless efforts.
