Pune, 3rd November 2022: The Pimpri-Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC) is working hard to improve its Swachh Survekshan 2023 ranking, but citizens do not appear to be cooperating. The civic body has collected Rs 1.25 crore in fines for rule violations in the last nine months, demonstrating this.

Having been ranked 19th in the last two years in the Swachh Survekshan, the civic body has been conducting awareness campaigns as well as penalising those caught violating rules such as spitting, dumping garbage, and littering in public places, according to officials.

Rapid urbanisation is causing an increase in civic issues in the twin cities. The PCMC has formed the Green Marshal Squad, which consists of 16 members, to take action against those who violate pandemic norms and civic rules. The squad, which includes civic employees, police officers, and transgender people, operates in eight zonal wards.

The squad monitors CCTV cameras to identify people spitting, littering, dumping illegal bio-medical waste and garbage on roads, dumping construction waste on roads, throwing unsegregated waste and not properly wearing masks, pet pooh, open defecation, and using banned plastic.

According to civic officials, this is not the first time PCMC has collected a large fine of Rs 1.25 crore. According to civic officials, the flying squad took action against 22,864 people and collected Rs Rs 81,49,929 between April 1, 2021, and March 25, 2022.

According to the officials, there are nearly 17 categories, and the fines vary depending on the category. For example, spitting in public places is punishable by a Rs 150 fine. The PCMC fined nearly 1,000 people for littering and dumping garbage on vacant lots. This is being done to restore sanitary conditions, and the fine will range between Rs 500 and Rs 25,000, depending on the amount of garbage dumped.
