Pune, 3rd November 2022: Efforts to have e-toilets, a critical component of the Swachha Bharat Abhiyan, have gone down the drain in Pune, thanks to the Pune Municipal Corporation’s (PMC) inordinate delay in responding to the urgent call to maintain the same. However, a former corporator is taking steps to reopen facilities that have been closed to the public for nearly three years.

A company established the facilities in 11 public places throughout the city in 2018, and it was maintained for one and a half years according to the contract. They have not been maintained since, causing significant inconvenience to citizens, particularly women and children.

The municipal government has yet to appoint a contractor to maintain them.

The e-toilets were built for Rs two crore through Anil Shirole’s MP development fund. The toilets’ distinguishing features are unmanned sanitation and automated systems. Although the facilities were free, many people used them because they were convenient, safe, and sophisticated.

Former corporator Siddharth Shirole, son of the former MP, is now attempting to resurrect the project. He has been in discussions with city officials, and things are looking up.

The first e-toilet was installed near the Chhatrapati Sambhaji Raje Udyan on JM road. It was later built in other locations such as FC road, JM road, Hirwai Garden, SB road, Model Colony, near Wadia college, Nilayam Bridge, Rajaram Bridge, Taljai Tekdi, Viman Nagar, LMD Garden, and Bavdhan.
