‘Philanthropic’: Serum Cuts Vaccine Price By Rs 100 For State Governments

Pune, 28th April 2021: The Serum Institute of India (SII) has cut the price of its Corona vaccine for the vaccination campaign starting May 1. The price of ‘Covishield’ has been reduced by Rs 100 for the state governments.

 

Serum recently informed the state governments to make available a dose of Covishield for Rs 400, which has now been reduced to Rs 300 per dose.

 

The price reduction was tweeted by Adar Poonawalla, CEO of Serum Institute of India. He said, “Taking a philanthropic step on behalf of the Serum, I immediately reduce the vaccine price from Rs 400 to Rs 300 for the states. This will save crores of rupees from the funds of the state governments. With this, more vaccination can be done and people’s lives will be saved.”

In January, DCGI approved two vaccines for emergency use in the war against Corona.  Serum provided a dose for Rs 250 to the central government in the initial period, after which its price was reduced to Rs 150.

 

At the same time, when the vaccination of people older than 18 years was announced on May 1, Serum and Bharat Biotech announced new prices. The Serum will now sell to state governments for Rs 300 and private hospitals for Rs 600 per dose. Bharat Biotech will give a dose of ‘COVAXIN’ to the state governments for Rs 600, while the price has been fixed at Rs 1200 for private hospitals.

 

Several states including Uttar Pradesh, Maharashtra, Rajasthan, and Madhya Pradesh have announced free vaccination for the next phase.  So far, about 15 crore people have been vaccinated. Currently, people above the age of 45 years are being vaccinated.
