Pimpri Chinchwad Crime Branch Recovers 13 Cars From Vehicle Thieves

Pimpri, November 3, 2020: The officials from Crime Branch Unit 1 of Pimpri Chinchwad police have busted a gang of vehicle thieves and recovered 13 cars worth Rs 1.39 crore from their possession. The gang used to sell the cars at throwaway prices after changing the chassis number.

Acting on a tip-off received by Assistant Police Inspector Ganesh Patil and constable Sachin More, a team led by Police Inspector Uttam Tangde arrested Manjit Joginder Singh Marwa, a native of New Delhi, who lived in Walhekarwadi, and Deepak Chamanlal Khanna (40) of New Delhi, on October 24. Later, police arrested Nagesh Chhagan Deshmukh (28) of Khopoli in Raigad district and Haroon Sharif Shaikh (39) of Chikhali, who used to help Marwa and Khanna sell the stolen vehicles. Marwa and Khanna are part of the gang whose members were arrested in January, while these two were absconding since then.

Speaking about their modus operandi, Commissioner of Police Krishna Prakash said, “The main accused Marwa used to buy accident-damaged cars from insurance companies with all documents. Later Khanna used to steal similar cars and then replace their chassis number, as per documents of the vehicles purchased from insurance companies. Then, they used to sell vehicles at low prices.”

According to police, there are 12 cases registered against Marwa in Delhi and Haryana, while Khanna has 38 cases in Delhi, Haryana and Punjab.

Police officials said that accused Marwa was planning to rent a new godown in the Kondhwa and start a garage there, while he was on the run.

In January, Crime Branch had arrested gang leader Chanprit Singh and others and recovered 12 vehicles and 15 engines of four-wheelers, totally worth Rs 2.19 crore from their possession. An FIR is registered in this regard with Dehuroad police station. Marwa had been absconding since then.

On October 24, cops learnt that Marwa coming to Pune via Mumbai with two stolen cars from Delhi. Accordingly, teams were dispatched to various toll plazas. The cops zeroed on a vehicle at Moshi toll Naka based on the information. However, the accused Marwa and Khanna got wind of it and they took U-turn and fled towards Chakan. However, after a chase of 30 km, cops managed to nab them.

Since January, cops have recovered 25 cars and 15 engines, totally worth Rs 3.58 crore, from the possession of these gang members. All these vehicles were stolen from Punjab, Delhi, Haryana and Chandigarh.

The action was taken under the guidance of DCP (Crime Branch) Sudhir Hiremath, DCP (Zone 1) Anand Bhoite and ACP RR Patil. The team included Inspector Tangade, API Patil, Police Sub Inspector Kaluram Landge and police personnel Subhash Sawant, Ravindra Gawande, Pramod Lande, Amit Gaikwad, Balu Kokate, Manokumar Kamle, Somnath Borhade, Mahadev Jawle, Maruti Jaybhaye, Sachin More, Pramod Garje, Sunil Chaudhary, Pramod Hiralkar, Anjanrao Sodgir, Anand Bansode and Nagesh Mali.
