Ravet, 5th April 2023: A woman fell prey to a fraudster who pretended to be an IPS officer and cheated her out of Rs 5.89 lakh. The incident occurred on March 27 when the woman received a call from an unknown number.

The caller posed as an officer from the Mumbai Police crime branch and informed her that a parcel she had addressed to someone in Taiwan had been rejected on suspicion of being contraband. He then handed over the phone to another person who identified himself as IPS Ajay Kumar Bansal and validated his claim by sending a photo of his identity card to her WhatsApp.

The fraudulent IPS officer told that her Aadhaar card could be used for international terrorism and six fraudulent transactions had been made from her bank account. He demanded a security deposit of Rs 5.89 lakh to investigate these transactions, and the woman, believing his story, sent the money to two bank accounts.

After realizing she had been cheated, she filed a complaint at the Ravet police station. PSI Ravindra Panhale is further investigating the case.

Bansal, the former Superintendent of Police in Satara district, is a respected and disciplined officer who has also worked in Gadchiroli for a few years. The police have launched an investigation to identify and catch the fraudster who cheated the woman.
