Dehradun, 6th March 2025: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday emphasized the need for year-round tourism in Uttarakhand, stating that no season should be considered an “off-season.” While inaugurating a bike and trek rally, he stressed the importance of ‘barahmasi’ tourism, encouraging visitors to explore the state throughout the year.

Earlier in the day, PM Modi visited the Mukhwa-Harsil region in Uttarkashi district, offering prayers at the Mukhimath temple, the winter abode of Goddess Ganga. Addressing the gathering, he stated, “The tourism sector must be expanded and made active for all 365 days. Uttarakhand should not have an off-season. Even in traditionally quieter periods, tourism should thrive.”

During his speech, the Prime Minister also expressed his condolences over the recent Uttarakhand avalanche, which claimed eight lives. He acknowledged the solidarity shown by the nation, stating, “I extend my heartfelt condolences for the tragic incident in Mana. The unity displayed by the country during this difficult time has provided great strength to the affected families.”

Upon arrival at Jolly Grant Airport, PM Modi was welcomed by Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami and other dignitaries. Expressing his enthusiasm for visiting Mukhwa, he remarked, “I am delighted to visit the winter residence of the sacred Mother Ganga in Mukhwa. This site is renowned worldwide for its spiritual significance and breathtaking beauty. It also represents our commitment to preserving heritage while advancing development.”

PM Modi also attended a winter tourism exhibition in Mukhwa, appreciating the artistic and cultural richness of the region. Traditional folk performances were staged to welcome him, with a video capturing him standing at the center, dressed in an off-white kurta-pajama, black jacket, and a Uttarakhandi hat, as local artists danced around him.

Following his temple visit, he flagged off a trek and bike rally in Harsil, reinforcing the state’s tourism initiatives. This aligns with the Uttarakhand government’s newly launched Winter Tourism program, designed to promote religious tourism while supporting homestays and local businesses.

PM Modi’s visit came just a day after the Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs, under his leadership, approved two major ropeway projects for Kedarnath and Hemkund Sahib, with a combined investment exceeding ₹6,000 crore.

Mukhwa, situated along the route to the Gangotri temple, serves as the winter residence of Goddess Ganga. Each year, after the Gangotri temple closes for the winter, the idol is ceremoniously relocated to Mukhwa temple.
