Pune, 13th December 2022: The ‘Pune’s Walk And Cycle Analysis’ – a report by the Institute for Transportation and Development Policy (ITDP) and the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) – was published on Pedestrians Day (11th December).

The research clarifies the gaps in the city’s streets and aids in locating the places that require urgent renovations, particularly in terms of safety, use, and accessibility. In this research, 11 major city roads were assessed on several occasions, and recommendations were made in response based on the survey’s findings about design, observation, and perception.

According to ITDP, 2,300 citizens were surveyed regarding 11 major roads consisting of 30 kilometres between October and November during the peak hours in the morning and evening. 65 percent of the 2,300 respondents polled were men, and 35 percent were women. 32 percent of commuters used foot traffic, while 40 percent used public transportation.

Pranjal Kulkarni, manager of the ITDP, claims that people who are engaged in a variety of activities, such as sitting, exercising, studying, interacting with others, or playing with children, are excellent markers of liveable streets. JM Road was the best-performing of the streets chosen for evaluation, followed by Rajbhavan Road and Satara Road. Magarpatta-Mundhwa Road, Vishrantwadi Road, and Shankarsheth Road, on the other hand, received the lowest ratings.

Dinkar Gojare, an executive engineer with PMC, said that the findings of the report will help authorities take immediate action depending on scores, thus protecting pedestrians.
