Pune, 5 July 2022: Considering the traffic congestion in the city, the Pune Municipal Corporation ( PMC) is now planning the 70 km intermediate ring road, to divert the traffic from outside the city. Because of this, the vehicle can be diverted without going to the central part of the city.

Earlier, a similar project the High Capacity Mass Transit Route (HCMTR) was introduced by the PMC which is still on paper.

Out of a proposed 70 km intermediate ring road, 47 km of roads currently exist on all four sides of the city. With the ring road project, these roads will be connected with another 23 km road. It includes tunnels, river bridges, and railway bridges. PMC has started the process of appointing a consultant for this project, which will be worth about Rs 2,200 crore.

Although projects like the metro and flyover are being done to solve the traffic issues in the city, all types of traffic are coming to the central part of the city. As a result, Swargate, Shivajinagar, Hadapsar, Kharadi, Yerawda, Pune University chowk, Navale bridge, Nal Stop, Katraj Chowk, Chandani chowk are getting congested. To avoid traffic congestion, Ahmednagar Road, Solapur Road, and Satara Road will be connected. The connecting roads are shown in the 2017 DPR. While HCMTR will be utilised only for public transport, this intermediate ring road can be used for private vehicles, said PMC officials.

“Alternative routes should be provided for traffic on major roads and intersections in the city. Recently a meeting was held to discuss topics like roads, land acquisition etc. Soon a consultant will be appointed for this project and the work will be completed in the next 2-3 years,” said V G Kulkarni, head of the road department, PMC.
