Proactive Planning: Pune Authorities Work to Mitigate Monsoon Traffic Congestion

Pune, 1st June 2023: In a meeting held at the Police Commissionerate on Thursday, Commissioner of Police Retesh Kumaarr and Municipal Commissioner Vikram Kumar directed the concerned agencies to expedite necessary measures to address traffic congestion in the city during the upcoming monsoon season.

The meeting, aimed at pre-monsoon preparations, saw the presence of key officials including Chief Executive Officer of Pune Smart City Sanjay Kolte, Joint Commissioner of Police Sandeep Karnik, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Traffic Branch) Vijaykumar Magar, Additional Commissioner of Municipal Corporation Vikas Dhakne, as well as representatives from Maha Metro, Tata Metro, PMRDA, PWD, Cantonment Board, and PMPML.

Given the ongoing metro line and station construction works, the focus was on addressing road-related issues. The meeting also discussed measures to mitigate rainwater accumulation in areas affected by flyover construction and ongoing digging activities under the Smart City project.

Additional Traffic Wardens Deployed: The speedy completion of drainage works was emphasized, along with the replacement of broken drain covers. The removal of road debris resulting from monsoon pipe line and drinking water pipeline work was also stressed. The Municipal Commissioner directed the provision of additional traffic wardens from Pune Municipal Corporation, Mahametro, and Tata Metro to aid in traffic regulation.

Specific attention was given to cleaning activities in Ambil stream, Kolewadi drain, Dalvi Nagar Chowk, Ambegaon drain, and Jambhulwadi drain. Measures were outlined to ensure that PMPML buses do not break down, and immediate removal of encroachments obstructing traffic was instructed.

Establishment of a Control Room: To address sudden rain-related emergencies, it was decided to establish a control room in the offices of all autonomous organizations. This control room will facilitate coordinated efforts among various departments. Officials from all departments were directed to exchange urgent messages for prompt responses.
