Kondhwa, 7th July 2025: A woman professor from a private engineering college in Pune has come under police scrutiny for allegedly advising a 22-year-old woman who filed a fabricated rape complaint, a case that briefly sent shockwaves across the country before being debunked by investigators.

The police have recorded the professor’s statement as part of their inquiry, revealing that she was in constant touch with the complainant on the day the alleged incident occurred.

“She is not only a close acquaintance of the complainant but also someone the young woman turned to for advice before approaching the police,” said Deputy Commissioner of Police (Zone V) Rajkumar Shinde. “We have found that the complainant sought detailed guidance from the professor on how to frame her complaint and interact with investigators.”

According to senior officials, if necessary, the professor may be summoned again for further questioning.
Commissioner Condemns ‘Manufactured Narrative’
Pune Police Commissioner Amitesh Kumar strongly criticised what he described as a deliberate effort to tarnish the city’s image by circulating an entirely fabricated story of sexual assault.

“This was a very serious complaint that initially raised major concerns about public safety. But our team cracked it within 24 hours and found that the entire account was not only misleading but intentionally manipulated,” Kumar said during the inauguration of a police outpost under the Sinhagad Road division.

The commissioner refrained from naming the specific case during his speech, but his remarks came days after the woman claimed that a delivery man had broken into her 11th-floor apartment, drugged her using a chemical spray, and raped her. She further alleged that the man clicked a selfie on her phone and typed a chilling message: ‘I will come back.’

However, police investigations revealed that no such delivery person existed, and the alleged intruder was actually a known acquaintance whom she had willingly invited to her home.

“There was no forced entry. No spray. The selfie was clicked with her consent and later tampered with. Our probe clearly indicates the involvement of the complainant in constructing a false narrative,” Kumar said.

Fabricated Evidence, Medical Report Inconclusive
Investigators also disclosed that the threat message found on the woman’s phone had been typed by her after her friend left, casting further doubt on her version of events. The complainant has a BE in Data Science and works with an IT firm in Kalyaninagar.

Her complaint initially went viral and triggered public outrage before the inconsistencies began to surface. Police had her statement recorded before a Judicial Magistrate First Class (JMFC) after noticing repeated contradictions in her account. She has also been referred for counselling, officials confirmed.

“We also received her medical report from Sassoon General Hospital, but the findings are inconclusive,” said DCP Shinde.

Professor’s Role Raises Alarms
Sources say the professor, regarded by the woman as both a mentor and friend, played a significant behind-the-scenes role in shaping how the complaint was framed.

“We suspect that the professor’s advice may have influenced the complainant’s decision to file a false case. This matter is under close review,” a senior investigator said.

Police officials are now examining whether any further action is warranted against the professor or if her involvement was limited to providing misguided emotional support.

As the case continues to unfold, the Pune police are urging the public to be cautious about drawing conclusions from viral social media claims.
“Spreading falsehoods about law and order collapses public trust and distracts from genuine cases that deserve attention. We are committed to protecting the city’s integrity and will deal firmly with any attempt to mislead the public,” Commissioner Kumar said.
