Wagholi, 12th April 2023: In an effort to combat the heavy dust and safety issues caused by dumpers carrying gravel and crushed sand in Lonikand, a group of valiant individuals led by Navnath Kand, Chairman of Lonikand Gaon Mahiti Seva Samiti, and deputy sarpanch Omkar Kand, along with other dedicated Gram Panchayat members, halted around a hundred of these troublesome dumpers in Lonikand yesterday.

Despite prior notices and meetings held with industry professionals in mining and transportation, the dumpers continued to cause chaos and calamity, prompting the team to take swift and decisive action. The professionals were urged to sprinkle water and cover their vehicles during transport to prevent the spread of dust and the occurrence of accidents. However, those who refused to comply with these crucial rules were threatened with the possibility of having their licenses revoked.

Ramdas Dabhade, President of the Pune District Mines and Crushers Association, praised the team for their unwavering dedication and commitment to ensuring the safety of the community. He acknowledged the team’s role in taking direct action against those who did not follow the rules, as well as recognizing their efforts in giving clear instructions to dumper owners and crushing unit owners to abide by the regulations.

Dabhade further noted that there are numerous internal roads that require repair and the administration should take measures to address this issue.

Navnath Kand, chairman of Lonikand Gaon Mahiti Seva Samiti, an NGO in Lonikand, expressed his frustration with the lack of response to their complaints, posing the question, “Don’t we have the basic right to breathe clean air?” He went on to say, “We have written to the District administration, Maharashtra Pollution Control Board, Gram panchayat, Tehsildar. We had no other way but to protest and stop the movement of these vehicles that are causing an abundance of dust in the area. The continuous dust in the air is causing severe illnesses to the people in the area.”

The team, led by Navnath Kand and his fearless deputy sarpanch Omkar Kand, alongside other dedicated members including Somnath Kand, Sudhir Kand, Dr. Dnyaneshwar Kand, Mayur Kand, Jay Kand, Rishikesh Kand, Vaibhav Kand, Sachin Kand, Deepak Kand, Rahul Shinde, Atul Magar, Tushar Shinde, and Sagar Zurunge, pledged to continue their valiant efforts until all necessary measures are put in place by all professionals in the industry.
