Pune: 12 Students Injured After Cab Rams Into Tea Stall Crowd, Drunk Driving Suspected

Sadashiv Peth, 31st May 2025: At least 12 people, including several MPSC aspirants, were injured after a speeding cab lost control and crashed into bystanders near Bhave High School in Sadashiv Peth around 5:45 PM on Saturday.

According to police officials, the Hyundai Aura tourist cab—allegedly driven under the influence—veered off the road near Narayan Sai Tea Stall and hit people standing near parked vehicles.

“The driver and his co-passenger appeared to be under the influence of alcohol. Preliminary investigation indicates rash and negligent driving. All three individuals in the vehicle are in custody, and a case is being registered at Vishrambaug Police Station,” confirmed DCP (Crime) Nikhil Pingle.

The injured were immediately rushed to Sancheti and Modak Hospital. There were no fatalities reported as of late evening.

The driver has been identified as Jairam Shivaji Mule, 27, a resident of Bibwewadi. The vehicle owner, Digambar Yadav Shinde, also 27, and co-passenger Rahul Gosavi, 27, are also in police custody. Officials said a detailed inquiry is underway to determine the exact sequence of events and whether the vehicle was being used commercially at the time.

Local witnesses stated that the area was crowded with students preparing for competitive exams, many of whom had gathered at the tea stall after study sessions. “There was a loud screech, and within seconds, people were screaming and lying on the ground. The car just ploughed through,” said a witness at the scene.
Senior officials from Vishrambaug Police Station arrived at the spot shortly after the incident and are monitoring the investigation.
A formal case is being registered under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyay Sanhita (BNS) related to rash driving, endangering life, and causing hurt.
