Pune, 25th July 2022: After the parents of a 12-year-old girl refused to marry their daughter to a 35-year-old married man with two children, distant relatives allegedly killed the girl and hanged her to make it appear as though she committed suicide.

The incident took place on May 31 in the Shikrapur neighbourhood of Dafalvasti, a Moje Dhamari town. When the child’s body was discovered hanging, the police reported it as an accident.

A case was filed in the Shikrapur police station under sections 302 (murder punishable by death or life in prison and a fine), 506 (punishment for criminal intimidation), and 34 (when a criminal act is committed by multiple people, each is liable for that act in the same manner). Recently, however, the deceased’s family claimed the girl had been murdered by her relatives.

The father of the child alleged, “We were not ready to marry our daughter to the man who is a relative. She wanted to go to school, but we were being forced by him and his family to proceed with the marriage. They killed her because we turned down their offer.”

The complaint was made by the mother of the deceased. The primary suspect Pankaj Kale, 35, and his family members Mayur Kale, Ajay Kale, and Haikan Kale were thereafter arrested by the police.

According to the girl’s mother, she was in Class VI. “My daughter wanted to pursue higher education and wanted to work for the government. We supported her and honoured her wishes. Our expectations have all been crushed,” she said.

She claimed, “While I and my husband were out, the four allegedly broke into our home. They killed her. Then they made a death threat against our other daughter. The police did not take our complaint seriously since we are a low-income family. They have only now filed a murder case against the four individuals. Our goal is fairness. The case is still not being thoroughly investigated by the authorities.”

According to the girl’s uncle, the Kale family was pressuring his sister and her husband to wed their daughter to Pankaj and had even offered to pay them Rs 2 lakh for it. Pankaj has two kids and is married.

API Vikram Salunke said, “We received the post-mortem results, but the reason for death is unclear. We are looking into the case to see if it was a suicide or a homicide. We initially reported the death as an accident, but after hearing the parents’ complaints, we changed it to murder.”
