Pune: 18 Workers Killed In Massive Fire At Chemical Factory, State Government Orders Enquiry

Pune, 7th June 2021: A total of 18 workers including 15 women died in the fire that broke out at a chemical factory in Pirangut in Mulshi taluka today afternoon.

Meanwhile, the Maharashtra state government has ordered an enquiry into the incident. The government will also provide a compensation of Rs five lakh to each family of the deceased.

According to Pune rural police, the incident took place around 4 pm at SVS Aqua Technologies factory located in Urawade village in Pirangut MIDC, about 27 km from Pune. The work of making sanitiser was going on in the chemical factory.

A huge plume of smoke was visible from afar at the site of the incident, due to which the magnitude of the fire can be gauged. Many more people are feared to have died in this incident.

According to the fire brigade, 37 employees were working at the time of the fire in this plant. 17 bodies have been recovered while 20 people have been evacuated from the plant. 

Rs 5 lakh assistance to relatives of fire victims: Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar: “It is unfortunate and tragic that the workers of a chemical company died in a fire near Urwade village in Mulshi taluka of Pune. It is even more tragic that the fire brigade was unable to rescue some of the victims despite their best efforts. We sympathize with the families of those killed in the accident and the state government will provide Rs 5 lakh each to the families of the victims”, said Deputy Chief Minister and Pune Guardian Minister Ajit Pawar.

Pawar said, ” The Pune District Collector has directed an expert committee headed by Maval Sub-Divisional Officer (SDO) to inquire into the cause of the fire. That inquiry will determine the exact cause of the fire and determine the cause of the accident. The fire brigade and local administration rushed to the spot after receiving information about the fire. After getting more information from the Collector, District Superintendent of Police, PMRDA CEO in this regard, I also directed them to immediately reach the accident site and take necessary measures.”

The district collector has inspected the situation and ordered an inquiry. The fire will be investigated as per their order. Police have registered a case for investigation. At present, priority is being given to completely extinguishing the fire and treating the injured. The district administration will be instructed to take necessary precautions to prevent such incidents in future”, Pawar said.

Prime Minister to pay Rs 2 lakh ex-gratia:The Prime Minister has announced an ex-gratia of Rs. 2 lakhs each from the PMNRF for the next of kin of those who have lost their lives due to fire at an industrial unit in Pune, Maharashtra. Rs. 50,000 would be provided to those injured.
