As of late Friday night, the search for the girl was still on.

According to ML Madewad, Sub-Inspector of the Talegaon MIDC police, Sakshi Vanjare, a BSc student from Akurdi, and her three college companions went to Kund Mala on Wednesday.

He said, “Vanjare lost her balance while sitting on the banks of the Indrayani and fell into the water.”

Madewad said, “In Maval, where it has been raining heavily for the past two days, the water levels have increased significantly and the student was “blown away due to the high current.”

Rescue teams from the Maval-based Vanyajivrakshak and Shivdurga Mitra organisations were employed to find the student.

He said, “After nightfall, we had to halt operations. We had searched since Wednesday to Friday night.”

During the rainy season, Kund Mala is a favourite destination for family outings. The police have now posted warning boards and pleaded with tourists not to enter the water and take selfies.

“Despite repeated requests from locals, many young people enter the water. Accidents have also happened here while taking photographs earlier,” he said.
