Pune, 2nd November 2023: In the month of October, Pimpri-Chinchwad city witnessed a concerning surge in dengue cases, with as many as 81 patients identified. This marks a significant increase in the number of dengue patients for the first time in the past four months. The Municipal Corporation’s medical and health department has issued an appeal to citizens to exercise caution.

The rise in dengue cases follows a steady increase over the previous months. In June, the city reported no dengue patients, but the situation changed as the year progressed. In July, 36 patients were identified among 1,432 suspected cases. August saw 52 patients from 2,145 screenings, and September reported 60 patients out of 2,327 screenings. October recorded the highest number, with 81 patients found among 2,438 suspected cases. In total, 229 dengue patients have been identified in the city in the last four months, following screenings of 9,444 suspected patients.

The increase in dengue cases has also led to a higher demand for platelets. The city’s health and medical department officials emphasize that stagnant puddles during the rainy season are breeding grounds for dengue mosquito larvae. As the rainy season concludes, the officials anticipate a decrease in dengue cases.

Dr Laxman Gophane, Medical Officer of Health, PCMC, stated, “In the ten months from January to October, a total of 1,20,372 fever patients were examined in Pimpri-Chinchwad. Among these, 17 cases of malaria were reported, with no fatalities. The highest number of malaria patients, five, was recorded in June, while August saw six cases. Dengue cases have a seasonal pattern, tending to increase during the rainy season and expected to decrease as the rains subside.”
