Pune, 8th July 2022: From 1981 to 2009, the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has prepared 23 plans to solve the traffic congestion in the city, to build a system for bicycles and public transport. Most of these projects have already been scrapped by the PMC, but only at present, according to a report prepared by the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation Limited (DMRC). This fact has come to the fore in the Right to Information Act.

The city’s public transport system has collapsed, and the use of private vehicles has led to traffic jams along the city’s main thoroughfares. Measures have been taken not only now but for the last four decades to improve traffic in Pune. Plans were made by hiring consultants, but most of the plans have not been implemented.

“The flyovers that have been built have been missed due to traffic jams in the city. The metro is also still incomplete. Bicycle tracks are just a name. From 1981 to 2009, PMC appointed 23 consultants and prepared plans for transport improvement, for which lakhs of rupees were spent. But these plans could not be used for the benefit of the citizens. The administration and the then ruling party are responsible for this, “said Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) general secretary Hemant Sambhus.

Some of the 23 major plans:

Cycle network (1981), Urban Long Term Transport Plan (1994), Parking Scheme (1996), Flyover Feasibility Study Report (1998), Coordination Test between PMT and PCMT (2000), Project for Sky Bus Metro ( 2004), Study of Integration of Transport between Pune and Pimpri Chinchwad (2004), Detailed plans for high-speed transport (2008), Metro Project Detailed Report (2009) and other transport plans have been prepared.

Dr Kunal Khemnar, Additional Commissioner said, “The Neo-Metro on the HCMTR route is being reviewed frequently by the administration to expedite the expansion of other metro routes in the city. Efforts are underway to make DP roads intermediate ring roads. Work is being done in coordination with the Municipal Corporation, Traffic Police, PMT and other organizations to improve traffic. The plans made earlier can be used by the corporation in making these improvements, so they will be considered.”
